Cultural Robotics

Cultural Robotics is an emerging field that sits at the intersection of robotics, anthropology, and cultural studies. Rather than treating robots purely as engineering artifacts optimised for efficiency or task performance, Cultural Robotics asks how robots are, and should be, shaped by the cultural, social, and historical contexts in which they are designed, deployed, and used.

This perspective recognises that robots don’t exist in a vacuum. The way people trust, adopt, resist, or misunderstand a robot is deeply influenced by local customs, values, language, and social norms. A robot designed with only one cultural context in mind may fail, or even cause harm, when placed in another. Cultural Robotics aims to make cultural awareness a core design principle, not an afterthought.

How it started

Cultural Robotics wasn’t dreamed up on a whiteboard. Around 2012, a small group of researchers in Singapore, spanning robotics, media, and communication studies, started swapping the lab for a pub near the National University of Singapore, talking research over drinks instead of under fluorescent lighting. Those loose, after-hours conversations, about why robots seemed to behave so differently depending on where in the world they were built and used, slowly hardened into a real research question: what happens when you take robotics seriously as a cultural practice, not just an engineering one?

That question became the founding paper of the field: “Cultural Robotics: The Culture of Robotics and Robotics in Culture” published in the International Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems (2013).

The paper made a case that’s still the field’s core argument today: robots are shaped by the cultural values of the people who build them, and by the societies that adopt or reject them, and that as robots grow more autonomous and socially embedded, they may eventually develop cultural dynamics of their own. It traced the idea back through the Greek myths of Daedalus, Pandora, and Pygmalion, and forward through Shelley’s Frankenstein, before landing on its central distinction between two kinds of cultural robotics: how human culture shapes robot design, and how robots, as a community of agents, might eventually generate a culture of their own.

Since then, the idea has grown into a recognised subfield, carried forward in particular by Belinda J Dunstan and Jeffrey TKV Koh, who have both done a great deal to develop the field in the years since, alongside a wider research community, including CultureBots, that continues to build on that original bar conversation.
